Chronic Pain and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM): Effective Treatment Methods

Chronic pain is a complex condition that affects millions of people worldwide. It can have a variety of causes, including trauma, inflammation, or underlying medical conditions. Many people seek alternative treatments to manage their pain, and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) offers a holistic approach that can be very effective. In this blog post, we’ll look at the different TCM methods used to treat chronic pain and how they can complement conventional medical practices.

WHAT IS TRADITIONAL CHINESE MEDICINE (TCM)?

Traditional Chinese Medicine is an ancient healing system that has been practiced for thousands of years. It includes a variety of therapies, including acupuncture, herbal medicine, cupping, and dietary therapy. TCM is based on the concept of balancing the body's vital energy, known as Qi, to promote health and well-being.

Key TCM Methods for Managing Chronic Pain

Acupuncture Acupuncture

is one of the most well-known TCM techniques. It involves inserting thin needles into specific points on the body to stimulate the flow of Qi and aid the healing process. Studies have shown that acupuncture can effectively reduce chronic pain, especially in conditions such as arthritis, back pain, and migraines. It works by releasing endorphins and other neurotransmitters that help relieve pain.

Herbal Medicine

TCM herbal formulas are tailored to the individual needs of the patient. Here is an example of a chronic pain formula that works by strengthening Qi and blood:

Recipe for chronic general pain:

Ingredients:

Dang Gui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis) – 10 g

Bai Shao (Radix Paeoniae Alba) – 10 g

Chuan Xiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong) – 6 g

Ren Shen (Radix Ginseng) – 6 g

Gan Cao (Radix Glycyrrhizae) – 3 g

Da Zao (Fructus Jujubae) – 5 g

Huang Qi (Radix Astragali) – 10 g

Preparation:

Pour 600 ml of water over the herbs.

Cook over low heat for about 30-40 minutes.

Filter and drink 2 times a day, 200 ml each.

Action: This recipe strengthens Qi and blood, which is beneficial for people with chronic pain caused by weakened life energy.

Cupping Therapy

Cupping involves placing negative pressure cups on the skin to increase blood circulation and relieve muscle tension. This method can be particularly beneficial for people with chronic back pain and neck stiffness. Cupping can also help reduce inflammation and promote relaxation.

Moxibustion

Moxibustion is a TCM practice that involves burning mugwort (moxa) near acupuncture points to warm and stimulate the flow of Qi. This technique can be helpful for chronic pain, especially that related to cold and damp, such as arthritis.

Tai Chi and Qi Gong

These gentle forms of exercise combine movement, meditation, and controlled breathing to improve physical and mental health. Regular practice of Tai Chi and Qi Gong can improve flexibility, reduce stress, and relieve chronic pain. Studies have shown that these practices can be particularly effective in treating fibromyalgia and lower back pain.

TCM Dietary Therapy

emphasizes the importance of diet in maintaining health. It is believed that certain foods have properties that can help relieve chronic pain. For example, including anti-inflammatory foods in your diet, such as omega-3 fish, leafy greens, and nuts, can support overall health and pain management.

Acupuncture Points

Here are some acupuncture points that can be used to treat chronic pain:

Shenshu (BL23) : Located in the lower back, at the level of the second lumbar vertebra, 1.5 cun outside the spine. Stimulation of this point can help relieve back pain.

Yintang (EX-HN3) : Located between the eyebrows, on the midline of the body. It is known as the "third eye" and is often used to relieve headaches and tension.

Zusanli (ST36) : Located 3 cun below the patella, 1 cun outside the shinbone. This is one of the most important acupuncture points that can help relieve joint pain and support overall health.

Hegu (LI4) : On the palm, in the hollow between the thumb and forefinger. Relieves pain in various parts of the body and reduces tension.

Sanyinjiao (SP6) : On the inside of the leg, 3 cun above the ankle, 1 cun from the shinbone. Promotes blood circulation and also relieves pain in the pelvic and lower body areas.

Our Medicine's Point of View

Our approach to treating chronic pain combines Traditional Chinese Medicine with modern medical practices. We believe that a holistic approach that addresses both the physical and emotional aspects of health is key to effectively managing chronic pain.

The philosophy of pain management is based on:

Integrate different modalities : Combine herbal medicine, acupuncture, manual therapy, and lifestyle changes to provide comprehensive care.

Patient Education : Understanding the causes of pain and how to treat it is essential for patients. We conduct workshops and information sessions to increase awareness of TCM and its benefits.

Holistic approach : pain is not only a physical symptom, but also an emotional and mental challenge. That is why in our treatment we focus on balancing the whole organism.

With this approach, patients can experience not only pain relief, but also improved overall well-being and quality of life.
