Garlic and TCM

Garlic in TCM

Garlic (Allium sativum) is highly valued in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for its medicinal properties and health benefits. It is considered a herb with a warm nature and pungent flavor. In TCM, garlic acts on the spleen, stomach, and lung meridians, and its main properties include:

  • Eliminating toxins and pathogens – Garlic is used to remove "cold" pathogens that may cause colds, infections, and abdominal pain.
  • Improving digestion – It stimulates the spleen and stomach, supports digestion, and helps remove excess dampness.
  • Strengthening Qi and immunity – Garlic supports the body's natural defense mechanisms.
  • Enhancing blood circulation – It helps disperse blood stasis, making it useful for addressing pain and swelling.

Scientific Studies on Garlic

Antibacterial and Antiviral Effects

Numerous studies have shown that allicin (the active compound in garlic) possesses strong antimicrobial properties. A study published in the Journal of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy (2018) confirmed garlic's effectiveness against bacteria, viruses, and fungi.

Effects on the Cardiovascular System

A systematic review published in Nutrition Research Reviews (2016) found that regular garlic consumption lowers blood pressure, reduces LDL cholesterol levels, and increases HDL cholesterol levels, thereby decreasing the risk of atherosclerosis.

Immune-Boosting Properties

A study published in Advances in Therapy (2001) demonstrated that garlic supplementation over 12 weeks reduced the frequency of colds by more than 60% in the test group compared to the placebo group.

Antioxidant Properties

Research published in Food Chemistry (2010) highlighted garlic's strong antioxidant properties, which help neutralize free radicals and protect cells from damage.

Precautions and Contraindications

  • Garlic should be used cautiously by individuals with sensitive stomachs, ulcers, or acid reflux.
  • Avoid consuming large amounts before surgical procedures, as it may increase the risk of bleeding.
  • Consult a doctor if you are taking anticoagulant medications.

Garlic is a powerful addition to your home medicine cabinet, but it should be used in moderation, taking individual health needs into account.
