In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), scalp massage is not only a method to enhance hair growth but also a way to harmonize Qi energy, improve blood circulation, and nourish hair follicles. Here's how to perform the massage effectively:


1. Preparing for the Massage

  • Relax: Sit in a comfortable position and take a few deep breaths to calm your mind. Perform the massage in the morning to boost Qi energy or in the evening to relax.
  • Supporting Oils: Use natural oils like rosemary, sesame, or jojoba, which are believed to support hair health in TCM.
  • Warmth: Warm the oils slightly to stimulate circulation and help them penetrate the scalp more effectively.

2. Massage Technique

a) Stimulating Acupressure Points

  • Baihui (GV20): Located at the top of the head in the center. Gently press with your fingertips for 1–2 minutes. This helps harmonize Qi and improve circulation.
  • Fengchi (GB20): Points at the base of the skull on either side of the neck. Massage gently to release tension and promote blood flow to the head.

b) Full Scalp Massage Movements

  1. Circular Finger Motions: Place your fingers on your scalp and use gentle circular motions. Move the scalp (not the hair) to stimulate circulation.
  2. Tapping with Fingertips: Lightly tap your fingertips over the entire scalp for 1–2 minutes to energize Qi.
  3. Smoothing Strokes: Use your hands to smooth the scalp gently from the hairline at the forehead down to the nape of the neck. This has a calming effect.

3. Rhythm and Duration of the Massage

  • The massage should last 5–10 minutes daily.
  • Consistency is key—perform the massage regularly, ideally every day, for a few weeks to notice results.

4. Additional TCM Tips

  • Balanced Diet: In TCM, hair health is linked to the liver and kidneys' energy. Include foods that strengthen these organs, such as black sesame seeds, walnuts, goji berries, and liver.
  • Relaxation: Stress disrupts the flow of Qi and blood to the scalp. Daily relaxation practices like meditation or breathing exercises can help maintain healthy hair.
  • Avoid Cold: Protect your head from cold temperatures, as TCM suggests that cold blocks the energy flow to the scalp.

By incorporating regular scalp massage and proper care into your routine, you can stimulate natural hair growth and enhance its condition in harmony with TCM principles.
